Welcome to the site of MIA, Manchester Italian Association, one of the oldest Italian associations in the UK.
MIA traces its roots back to 1888, when the Manchester Italian Catholic Society was formed to look after the cultural needs of the colony of Italian families who had settled in the Ancoats area of Manchester. In 1902 another society was formed, the 'Mutual Aid Society' whose aims were to help those who fell on hard times through mutual financial support. In the 1980s The Mutual Aid Society merged with the Manchester Italian Catholic Society, which subsequently renamed to the Manchester Italian Association, or MIA.
Throughout the year MIA organises many events, from trips to social gatherings such as the Italian dinner dance. The most high profile event is probably the Manchester Italian Procession, which takes place every June. They also organise exhibitions, such as at Manchester Town Hall, Manchester Central Library and most recently at Manchester's MOSI (Museum Of Science and Industry).
Today MIA also extends to work in the wider community, regardless of nationality, to bring together young people in education and leisure activities, and help the elderly.
